He groans, a low sexy sound in the back of his throat that reverberates through me, and his hand moves down my body to the top of my thighs, his fingers digging into my flesh through the plum dress. I pour all of my angst and heartache of the last few days into our kiss, binding him to me, and it hits me – in this moment of blinding passion – he’s doing the same, he feels the same.

I started reading Fifty Shades Darker today. I made my own predictions at the end of Fifty Shades of Grey, with two of them coming to light in chapter one – Ana and Christian would get back together, and that they would use some kind of abuse angle to explain Christian’s fetish. The prologue lays out what appears to be a flashback scene of a young Christian hiding while his mother is abused by a man. She seem to be strung out, drunk, or both and is unable to protect herself from this man hitting her with a belt. Once again, I plead to E L James – please do not make Christian a Dom because he was abused as a child.
Now that that mini-rant is out of the way, let’s get to this new book, shall we? Fifty Shades Darker picks up a few days after Ana and Christian split, with them doing what every ordinary couple who just split up do – go on a date to see a show put on by a guy who has the hots for the just-broken-up-girl. (Okay, that may be a bit mean, since I know the event was planned beforehand, but really – couldn’t Ana find another way to get there?) Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey start off at arm’s length, but are literally pressed up against each other in a dark alley pseudo-mouth-fucking in a matter of pages. I’m glad these two have worked out their issues already – I just want more kinky fuckery!!
Let’s talk about Jack Hyde. I’m already getting the heebie-jeebies from him. Ana mentions a few times that he gets too close for comfort, that he’s asking personal questions. Sure, inviting someone out for drinks after work with the rest of the co-workers isn’t that bad, but a one-on-one date with your creepy boss? Yeah, that’s a red flag right there if I’ve ever seen one! I’m sure Christian already knows everything there is to know about Hyde, and I would assume he wouldn’t let Ana near him with a ten foot pole if there were any obvious issues. I am getting the feeling, though, that at some stage in the future, Christian will be ‘rescuing’ Ana from Hyde somewhere in the next few chapters.
