Kinky Sex Toy Review – Spreader Bars

Kinky Sex Toy Review – Spreader Bars

Spreader bars – one of the more hardcore pieces of bondage equipment we come across in erotic novels, and not usually found in the sex toy section of lingerie shops and adult movie stores.  It was covered on the list of limits, and I’ve been told that it comes into actual use later on in the series. As I’m a sucker for the darker side of the toys and pieces used in FSoG, I was pretty psyched to see that this toy was covered. I mean – who doesn’t love a bit of bed bondage?

Like our favorite Dom explained briefly, spreader bars are a single bar, usually made from metal that is designed to keep limbs apart. Typically, there are cuffs on the ends to wrap around the limbs. They are usually used on the legs, so that the wearer is more ‘exposed’. This also restricts movement of the legs, which can be a positive thing for those who tend to squirm and wiggle when stimulated. There are also smaller versions made for arms, as well as single bars that restrain both the arms and the legs simultaneously.  Spreader bars can be used alone, or in conjunction with other bondage setups such as those for suspension. In those cases, specific suspension spreader bars are used, as they are made from stronger materials and are designed to support more weight. These can also help transform any regular bed into a BDSM bondage bed.

Why are they on a limits list? Well, like most forms of bondage, spreader bars restrain a person, which can cause some to have a negative reaction. For me, it’s a step to giving up control. Some women instinctively close their legs when getting aroused, as both a way to limit their feelings down there, or out of embarrassment. With spreader bars, there’s no way that this can happen. Using combinations of spreader bars and restrains can position a person in some unique ways on a bondage bed. I’ve seen images of women who are wearing ankle spreader bars, have their hands bound with rope, and then the rope is fed between their legs and attached to the bar. When put onto their fronts, this makes the person take an ‘face down ass up’ position where their back side is completely and utterly exposed. This is as much mental submission as it is physical submission.

My own experiences with spreader bars are pretty limited at this point, mostly used for bed bondage. I’ve looked at a few, and decided I’m going to go with the Bondage Bar from Adam and Eve. I don’t think I’m quite ready for the two piece set that looks quite domineering in the Spread Em Bar & Cuff Set, but I think if spreader bars are something I enjoy, I’ll have no problem in upgrading. They also offer a less intense version called the Sex & Mischief Spread The Love Bar, which is pretty reasonable in cost as well for those who REALLY aren’t sure that they can take it to this level.
