One of the biggest questions that came out when it was announced there would be a movie was, what would be the 50 Shades of Grey movie rating?
If the movie stuck to the book, it would be pornographic. But since that’s the juiciest part of the book, readers would miss it if it wasn’t there.
In early January it was confirmed that the 50 Shades of Grey film would indeed have an R rating in the United States, bypassing the NC-17 rating that would have allowed much more flesh and action on the screen. While the R rating opens it up more viewers, it might also tame down the book. From what we’re hearing from the Fifty Shades director Sam Taylor Johnson, there’s a lot of innuendo going on. “Its details, flesh and fingers and skin and eyes and looks,” she says, clarifying that if you saw the actual sex, “the mystery would be gone. You see a lot, but you don’t have to see anything graphic.”
This is a turnaround from previous reports. Back in 2014, screenwriter Kelly Marcel confirmed – even before the 50 Shades of Grey preview came out – that they’d be seeking the higher rating. “We are 100 percent going there,” she said. “It will be rated NC-17.” This may have something to do with the fact that Jamie Dornan – who plays the leading male Christian Grey – was not going to do full frontal nudity.
The MPAA announced that the movie’s R rating was based on “strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language.” We’re thinking that the ‘unusual behaviour’ mentioned is for the BDSM overtones, even if there isn’t any directly viewed action on the screen. It’s not a usual phrase used rating movies, that’s for sure! When a number of movie critics were asked, they believe that the 50 Shades of Grey film actually had to fight for this lower rating as the majority of other films with sexual content on this level received the NC-17 film rating.
You can get a taste of the R rated nature of the movie from the 50 Shades of Grey movie preview trailers that have been released. There’s a lot of focus on sounds, looks and glimpses as opposed to the outward BDSM and nudity that we read about in the novels. Is this going to put a damper on what the readers are looking for in the book? We don’t think so.
Going by social media chatter and the conversations going on in the forums and fan sites, we’re expecting that the 50 Shades of Grey film is going to break records at the box office this February!
