What You Should Know Before Reading Fifty Shades of Grey

Part of the reason I’ve started reading Fifty Shades of Grey is because a few of the gals at work were raving about it. There’s a core group of about seven of us who tend to hang out. For the sake of this blog, I’m going to call them “The Grey Girls”. Three of the Grey Girls have read at least the first book, while four of us haven’t. The four FSoG virgins have decided we’d read the book ‘together’, that way we can discuss it as we go through.

That’s not to say we’ve already had an earful from the three girls who have already read it. I swear the hype to this book better be half as good as the book itself! I’ve watched the Today Show interview that EL James had with Michelle Kosinski, and know that EL James herself is a bit iffy about all the attention the book is getting. Don’t tell that to the Grey Girls who have read the book, though! These ladies are DIE HARD fans. They’ve given me a few things to keep in mind when reading the book, which I thought I’d share with my bloggers.

What You Should Know Before Reading Fifty Shades of Grey

  • This is EL James’s first book, so don’t expect amazing literature. I think they mean his on a grammar / style / flow kind of aspect. I’ve actually heard this myself from others. Apparently the Fifty Shades novels aren’t ‘well written’, but that doesn’t really matter in the long haul.
  • Christian (the main character’s lover) is a Masochist. He gets off from hurting women. They wanted to make sure I knew straight away that if this was going to turn me off, don’t bother getting the book.
  • Ana (the main character) is a lot like the chick from Twilight. Which makes sense, given the fact that Fifty Shades of Grey started off as a Twilight fanfic. This isn’t a problem, since I’m probably one of the few folks on planet Earth who hasn’t watched the Twilight movies or read the Twilight books.
  • You will get horny reading it. Yes, they actually warned me about this. Not that my sex life is anything to complain about. My husband and I have a pretty healthy bedroom life going on. I suppose it’s not a bad thing to want more sex!

Right, so with the foundation out of the way, I started reading the book. I’m about five pages into it at the moment. I would have probably finished the chapter by now, but having a little one running around the house, I don’t get a lot of down time. I have to admit, it’s a bit slow going at the moment, but the girls told me that if I can stick out the first four chapters or so, it’ll be worth my while.

Once I’m done with the first chapter of Fifty Shades of Grey, I’ll put my synopsis and review up for you to read. I’ll also fill you in on what the other Grey Girls think of the story as well. Who knows – maybe we are all budding BDSM enthusiasts in the making!
